1 Sketch: 2 Designers Start to Finish

Are you ready for a fun Start to Finish that begins with a sketch given to two scrapbookers? This week, I found the following sketch on the Echo Park blog that I decided would be fun to challenge Ashli Oliver, or soapHOUSEmama, to and then come together to see what both of us created. Disclaimer: Neither of us have seen each other’s layout until today’s release so we will both be amazed as well.

First things first, I grabbed a sheet of October Afternoon 5 & Dime Rock Candy for the background. I pulled some greens, whites and grays from my scraps and started to play around with where they would be located and marked in pencil their locations so I could layer behind.

Next, it was time to do some base layering. I used Olive, New England Ivy and Cocoa inks by CTMH to stamp the Studio Calico doilies in several layered spots on the background.

Okay, it needs a bit more. Grab the Studio Calico Taxi Mister Huey and spray a bit here and there.

Now time to start layering the scraps. The main photo section is a scrap of green paper layered on top of grey paper. Both of these are solids as I wanted them to truly bring in the eye to the photo. I flanked the central section with the Amy Tangerine Sketchbook paper. Note, the green paper on the left side of the center strip is longer than the grey paper. This is NOT necessary but it was what I had and knew I wouldn’t use the scrap so I went with it and knew I was going to hide it.

Now, let’s cover up that open area. I wanted to journal there so I dug through my pre-printed journaling cards and found this one by Splendid Miss M that I had printed in grayscale. I also grabbed a Whisker Graphics kraft bag and white doily to add more layers and pull in the doilies that I had already stamped.

I thought the journaling spot was a little bright so I inked it up with Peeled Paint Distress Ink around the edges and a bit on the inside. I also added some strips of washi tape around the edges and stuck a piece of paper from Amy Tangerine’s Daybook behind to add some balance.

Time for some photos! Now you can see why I picked the green because my sweater in the pictures is green as well as the drink in one of the photos.

The doilies were getting to be an eyesore to me so I decided they needed to be painted. Grab the watercolors and my aqua pen and filled them in along with the colors that they had been stamped. Much better! I also wiped off my brush a bit on the paper from the Amy Tangerine Daybook.

Now time for a mixed up title. Amy Tangerine Foam Journal Thickers in white were for the big part of the title. I LOVE these Thickers as they are such a great and simple font. I added the other words with Basic Grey Offbeat Alphabet Stickers. I hoard Basic Grey alphas because they are so versatile!

Decided this needed a date up by the journaling and grabbed the Amy Tangerine Thickers again for the date and Basic Grey Hello Luscious Mini Mono Alphabets for the month. Okay, three alphas in one layout is enough!

More layers are needed. I grabbed some buttons to fill in the smaller doilies and flank them on the washi tape as well. All were tied with black rustic twine and look great.

Now for a dilemma, what do I do with the bag? I already have a spot for my journaling and after mulling it over with Ashli, I went with confetti. Now, I don’t have the punch that will do this for me so I punched each of these by hand with my Crop-a-dile. WHEW, what a workout! Grab the Glue Gloss and stick things down randomly.

All that was left to do is the journaling and call it done! I kept the journaling about why this night was so fun which it always is with my husband (roommate at the time) and friend Lisa.

So what do you think? Are you interested in joining in on this sketch? Leave a link below if you do and don’t forget to check out Ashli’s version on her blog today as well.
